The Sky

August 17, 2008 at 10:02 pm (observations, stuff) (, )

While flying back the the States on the airplane, I noticed how beautiful the clouds were. During the two months that I’ve been in Korea, the tall buildings and the endless tops of mountains blocked my view of the sky. But now, the sky’s wonderful color seems to renew my mind and just make me feel happy. I feel like a hippie saying this, but nature is wonderful.  Don’t you think so? I mean what if there were no trees, mountains, flowers, canyons, ravines, rivers, oceans, waterfalls, etc.? What a dull world this would be. Next time, you should just try looking at the shapes of the clouds or the colors of the sunsets. I’m sure it will relax you a bit.

People

August 8, 2008 at 5:52 am (Personal, Thoughts, observations) (, , , )

It’s absolutely amazing how different people are, and at the same time, how alike we are. Every person is unique from another, but I believe that people, in nature, are somewhat the same. Reading King Leopold’s Ghost strengthened my pessimistic view of humans as avaricious creatures. Although King Leopold II and many other infamous people who have killed and manipulated for their own benefit are extreme examples, I believe that most people would sacrifice their morals for gain.

The value of morals has decreased to an abysmal low. In the past, religion (although some did stray away) and a sense of family kept most people from committing crimes against each other. For example, because more people had stricter discipline when it came to religion in the past, adultery, stealing, etc. were deeds abhorred. However, now, the grip that religion had on our lives, which did limit our freedom in a good way, has become less firm and less people choose to follow their moral sense.

Also, in the past, money wasn’t as necessary as it is today. In today’s society, you can’t go anywhere or do anything without money. If you go out naked, you will be arrested for disrupting the public and fined. In the past, you could live a life of agriculture and not associate with “corporates” at all, and it would be okay; land was plentiful and farming was normal. But now, all kinds of stereotypes and limits hinder one from pursuing a life without society. First of all, you have to get the land, and the expensive equipment and seeds to even begin. Perhaps you could go live in the Amazon or the grasslands and hunt wild animals, but you will probably get sick or hurt in some way.

The main reason why we have become such “unmoral” people is money. As the value of a materialistic wealth grew, the imaginary and individualistic moral sense started to lose its position in the center of human minds. After all, why not discard something that doesn’t exist physically, and buy yourself a mansion?

Think about it, if you had the choice of earning one billion dollars in exchange for the life of one human in some remote part of the world, would you not take it? After all, every minute, tens, if not hundreds, of people die. Would you care for one person in our world of billions? Not many would.

Please leave a comment what you think. I would like to listen to what others think. If you do leave a message, visit back as I will reply to it. Thanks and sorry for not posting recently. Will be on trip soon too.

Sound of Muzak – Porcupine Tree

August 2, 2008 at 8:22 am (Music, Thoughts, observations) (, , )

The Sound of Muzak – Porcupine Tree
Hear the sound of music
Drifting in the aisles
Elevator prozac
Stretching on for miles

The music of the future
Will not entertain
It’s only meant to repress
And neutralise your brain

Soul gets squeezed out
Edges get blunt
Demographic
Gives what you want

Now the sound of music
Comes in silver pills
Engineered to suit you
Building cheaper thrills

The music of rebellion
Makes you wanna rage
But it’s made by millionaires
Who are nearly twice your age

One of the wonders of the world is going down
It’s going down I know
It’s one of the blunders of the world that no-one cares
No-one cares enough

I absolutely love this song. It speaks the truth about how music is “going down” and “no one cares.” Not many people realize the crisis the music industry is in. By the way, Muzak is music designed to make people have longer patience, shop more, buy more, etc. It’s the music you hear in elevators. Thats why it says,

The music of the future

Will not entertain

It’s only meant to repress

And neutralize your brain

Make Searches Worthwhile with… Scour!

July 31, 2008 at 5:33 am (Earnings, Personal, stuff) (, , , , )

Ever get bored with searching? Well, make your searches worth something with Scour. Scour pays you points for using its search engine, which you can later redeem for visa cards ($25, $50, $100). Only 6,500 points are needed for the $25s. You might think this is a lot, but you get:

  • 1 point for every unique search

  • 2 points for a vote (You simply click thumbs up or thumbs down)

  • 3 points for a short comment!

You can get a maximum of 4 points per search. So if you searched, and then left a comment, that would be all you can earn for one search.
You also receive 25% of what your friends/referrals earn.

By the way, their search engine combines results from GOOGLE, YAHOO, and, MSN, so you get the top three search engines in one!

If your still suspicious on how long it will take to earn that $25, I did some math for you guys:

  • You need to earn about 17~18 points everyday in order to reach 6,500 points in 1 YEAR

  • You need to earn about 34~36 points everyday in order to reach 6,500 points in 6 MONTHS

  • You need to earn about 72~73 points everyday in order to reach 6,500 points in 3 MONTHS.

  • You need to earn about 216~217 points everyday in order to reach 6,500 points in 1 MONTH.

Again, this estimate is WITHOUT any referrals.
So why not give it a try, and earn something off your searches. Also,
you can read other people’s comments on different sites, which helps
sometimes.
Start Searching with a Purpose!

Reviews

July 30, 2008 at 7:59 am (Earnings, stuff) (, , , , , )

I had a Money blog in the past, but I couldn’t find time to keep up with it, so I stopped. I made a couple reviews in a unique format, which I put too much effort into making to let it decay in a database, so I thought I might post it here in case it interests anyone. I put the link to the direct file, because it looks better that way. Let me know if you can’t access it for some reason. Please leave a comment if you like them. Makes me feel better xD.

EDIT: I will put up the other link when the server is not down. Also, the site that I reviewed is upgrading~
Thanks for the patience.

Why 0.99999999999999999999999999… is actually 1

July 29, 2008 at 3:47 am (observations, stuff)

Did you know that, according to some people, 0.99999999999999999… is actually equal to 1? Well, of course, this is still in debate, but the proof to getting this conclusion is quite persuasive. For example, to get this solution, you take 1/9 or 0.111111111111111111… . Then, if you multiply that by 9, you get 0.999999999999999… . However, if you look at the fraction, it is actually 9/9, which is the same thing as 1. However, because the number 1/9 is NEVER ENDING, we can’t really say that 0.9999999999999999 is equal to one, because the difference is almost non-existent. Think about it, what is the difference between 1 and 0.99999999(recurring)? You can’t determine it! if you say its 0.001, it’s wrong because that would be the difference between 1 and 0.999! Math is Crazy.

Memorizing Vocabulary

July 28, 2008 at 3:02 am (Personal, observations, stuff)

Recently, i’ve been studying for the SAT, and that means memorizing vocabulary. People have told me that I’m really good at memorizing stuff, but I don’t really think I am all that good. Really, the more you know about anything, the easier it is to memorize. Here are some tips:

  • If you read any “learn to memorize really quickly” book, it will just tell you to relate things to the most abstract, strange thing that you can imagine. Just like how dreams without any interesting features are easily forgotten, so are words. When you memorize a word, try to think of it in context with something incredibly strange. It can even be lewd or perverted, just as long as it works, and you don’t re-enact it in public xD. I won’t put an example here because… well, I don’t think I need to.

  • Another really useful method that I use 60% of the time is by taking parts of a word and then making a weird situation/sentence/story/etc. with that. What’s the difference between this and the tip above? Well in the one above, you take the whole word, so you need to know what it means, and then use the meaning to make the weirdest story you can think of. However, in this method, you simply take parts of a word to help you remind or tell you the definition itself. For example: the word enamored means charmed, or captivated. How do I remember this? Well the word amorous means passionately loving, so I think en (in) amor (love) with something, which clicks in my brain as : charmed or fond of something. It may be hard at first, which is why this method is a LOT easier if you know more and have more to associate with.

  • Sometimes, the sound of a word will help you remember its meaning. The word phlegmatic means calm (almost too calm), or impassive. Try saying the word “phlegmatic.” It comes out very slowly at the ‘plegm’ part. This helps me remember it as a boring, almost lazy word, which then helps me imagine someone who is boring and doesn’t respond much – calm or impassive. I’d have to say I’m a little phlegmatic. A Stoic, perhaps.

  • Learn roots! They help a lot when you are guessing what a word means. For example, “chron” means time, so if you have a word or question relatated with time, go for something with “chron” in it.

Well that’s all. Hopefully, it will help you on your journey in becoming a SAT-vocab spiting guru. Oh, one more thing, continue to review the vocab you learned the previous session so that you won’t forget them! Now go, apprentice!
